Godfrey Morgan

Published in 1882, Godfrey Morgan (also known as A Castaway on a Desert Island or The Robinson Crusoe School) is Jules Verne's playful and affectionate contribution to the castaway tradition. It blends humor, adventure, and satire into a story about the difference between learning about life and actually living it.

Godfrey Morgan is a young man of comfortable means, engaged to his devoted cousin Phina, yet restless for adventure before settling into domestic life. His uncle, a man of practical wisdom, decides to grant his wish by sending him on a voyage around the world — accompanied, to Godfrey's dismay, by Professor Tartlet, his earnest tutor and athletics coach. The journey is meant to be instructive, a grand tour that will prepare Godfrey for responsibility.

But the ship is wrecked, and Godfrey, Tartlet, and a sailor named Will find themselves stranded on a deserted island. Suddenly, all the theory Godfrey has absorbed from books must be translated into practice: building shelter, finding food, making fire, and surviving. The comic contrast between Tartlet's academic pedagogy and the raw demands of survival becomes one of the novel's great pleasures.
