Propeller Island

Published in 1895, Propeller Island (original French: L'Île à hélice) is one of Jules Verne's most inventive and satirical works — a floating paradise powered by immense engines that cruises the Pacific Ocean at the whim of its fabulously wealthy inhabitants. This artificial island, named Milliard City, is a marvel of engineering and a monument to excess, where the world's richest citizens have created a paradise that follows the sun.

The story begins when a quartet of French musicians — Sebastien Zorn (cellist), Pinchinat (violinist), Frascolin (violist), and Yvernès (second violinist) — find themselves stranded on this mechanical marvel after a shipwreck. Welcomed as entertainers, they become both observers and participants in the strange society of Milliard City, where two rival factions of millionaires compete for control of the island's direction, both literal and political.

Verne's satire is at its sharpest here. The island's two capitals, each governed by a separate faction of the ultra-rich, are locked in a cold war of vanity and pride. King Malec, the nominal governor, presides over a society where every desire can be satisfied and every dispute is amplified by limitless resources. Beneath the gilded surface, tensions mount — and the island's very mobility becomes a weapon.

Propeller Island is Verne's most prescient meditation on wealth, inequality, and the environmental cost of luxury. Decades before the age of megayachts and artificial islands, he imagined a world where the rich could detach themselves entirely from the rest of humanity — and discovered that even paradise cannot escape the consequences of its own design.
